What’s your favorite family Christmas-gone-wrong story? I’m sharing a few of mine today, just to keep it cheery here on the blog 🙂
Story #1: A few years ago whilst I was pregnant with little e, Eric and I spent the morning at a friend’s house decorating gluten-free sugar cookies. However I definitely forgot to add something to the cookie dough as it completely melted in the oven into one giant, extra-thin cookie all over the parchment. There was basically no distinguishing any of the cutouts or decorations we’d done because it was such a mess 😛
Not to be deterred, we used the cookie cutters to cut shapes out of the big cookie blob and enjoyed them anyways, although they were rather thin and chewy. And I didn’t bring them to any holidays dinners that year, that’s for sure!
Story #2: In my family, I’m known for making sweet potato casserole for Thanksgivings and Christmases. So naturally when Eric’s family invited me to our first Christmas together in 2014, I wanted to make it for them too.
We ended up vacationing in a condo in Keystone and going skiing/snowshoeing. But it’s a popular choice to spend the holidays there, so the grocery stores were pretty picked over and ingredients for Christmas dinner were lacking. I was missing pecans and vanilla (I added a spoonful of vanilla ice cream because… better than nothing?), and I accidentally bought a mix of white and orange sweet potatoes instead of just orange. I also didn’t have a potato masher so I used a fork.
The resulting casserole was the ugliest, white-and-orange mottled, chunky, underflavored dish I have probably ever made and I’m pretty sure everyone just ate some to be polite. None of the Walkers ever asked me to make it again, lol.
Story #3: My family used to have the most ornery, mischievous dog named Maddy. She was adopted shortly before I was born and lived to be 16. She looked like a cross between a whippet, terrier and half-drowned rat.
Anyways, after my parents were divorced, my sister and I went shopping at Target together to pick up stocking stuffers for my mom. We bought toiletries, socks and Lindt truffles, and I hid the bag under my mirror dresser where I kept most of my Christmas gifts.
Maddy, being the delightfully nosey dog that she was, dragged it out whilst I was at school, took the truffle bag out of my shopping bag, tore it open and ate all the truffles with the wrappers on. She then proceeded to throw up all over my bedroom and the hallway. I learned to keep edible gifts up on shelves after that incident!
Well, that’s it for today as it’s time to grab the baby. Tell me about your Christmas misadventures in the comments!
