For my family growing up, the kitchen and kitchen table were the heart of the home. My parents both love to cook, so even after the divorce we’d eat pretty much every dinner as a family and talk about our days.
I didn’t understand why they made such a huge deal out of eating together at the time. But in retrospect I realize it wasn’t all that common to sit down to a homemade meal with one or both parents and siblings every night–but it was definitely invaluable for our relationships.
At our old house, we got by with my parents’ first table and chair set in our dining room. It’s a gorgeous handmade Amish set that’s very ornate, with Queen Anne style chairs, silky dark green patterned seats, and an extendable oval table. But in our new living space, I’m excited to decorate in my style with pieces I hope we have for life.
There’s something about putting your own stamp on your space and curating it well, that makes being at home so enjoyable. And I want this space to feel like home; to some extent, for many reasons, our old house never truly did.
We’re lucky not to be starting completely from scratch as my dad had an old farmhouse style table that goes perfectly in our space. It’s this Pottery Barn table but made with a different type of warmer-toned dark wood.
We paired it with six of these white and walnut farmhouse chairs from Home Depot, which is the best price by far for this style. They’re extremely sturdy (if a bit difficult to assemble) and look perfect with the table.
I’m still searching for the perfect buffet–I’m hoping for something made with a bit more rustic light-colored wood, but not too industrial. I thought about more white with a walnut top but I think that’s too matchy-matchy for me!
And I would love to put a large print on the larger wall behind the table but again, I haven’t selected it yet. I tend not to buy things unless I’m 110% positive it’s what I want, but I’m thinking about something with black script on a white backdrop, and something that is meaningful to our family.
And that’s a wrap on writing for today as I need to go get kids up from their naps so that they sleep tonight! Just thought I would share my current project in my non-kid time 🙂
