This is going to be a bit of a different “life lately” post than normal as I’m only wanting to touch on a few topics (but more in-depth than previous posts). We’ve been busy over the summer and I’ve finally found the motivation to get back to writing with the arrival of cooler weather.
Side note: it was in the low 60s today, blustery and just great walking weather overall. It made my fall-loving heart happy, although I know it won’t last through the week. We’re still due for an Indian summer before it really gets cold.
Skincare: The Good, the Bad, & the Time-Consuming
I had gotten a bit lazy with my skincare since having kids and decided over the summer that it was time to remake my routine. Next year brings a big birthday for me–30, finally my “golden birthday,” ha!–and I felt like I should have a solid anti-aging routine in place before then.
First things first, sunscreen and/or a baseball hat when it’s bright out. Badger Balm is our favorite for serious skin protection but I’m also keen to try Alba Botanicals face-specific lines. My foundation (BareMinerals) also has some SPF. I prefer mineral-based sunscreens, personally.
Next, a morning routine. I started using a proper cleanser (this one) instead of regular bar soap and following with organic rosehip oil before doing my makeup. That oil is the one for my skin in terms of hydration. I’ve tried several moisturizers over the past few years but this one is the absolute winner!
In the evenings I wash and exfoliate in the shower, then pat on vitamin C serum while my skin is damp and let it dry. After that I use more rosehip oil, although in the winter I usually switch to something more intensely hydrating because of the harsh dry air here. I’m currently debating the merits of starting a moisturizer with retinol?
Other things I’m on the fence about trying: face/under-eye masks, facial treatments, and switching from a powder foundation to a liquid tinted moisturizer. The powder settles in a not-so-flattering way!
Fitness: Staying in Shape with Kids
Someday, when I only have one or no children who aren’t in full-time school, I’ll get a membership to Lifetime Fitness, drop the little at the childcare center there, and enjoy a glorious hour of working out or going to a yoga class. I’m still a few years away from that, though.
Still, it’s nice to feel confident in your body and fitness (since being slim does not automatically mean health). Lately I’m enjoying walking to and from my kids’ preschool 2-3 times per day for drop-offs and pickups, and we usually go for at least one longer walk or hike on the weekend, too.
I also started yoga in the evenings over the summer. Kendra Tolbert is my current favorite channel. It’s such a nice grounding way to spend a few minutes that truly feels like self-care, has helped improve my flexibility and improved my back pain (yay scoliosis).
I’m keen to start some simple home workouts this fall, although I do need to invest in a few weights/gear first!
Fall Food Goals: Raw Milk, Baking, Chili Night?
We haven’t been to our favorite raw milk farm in ages and I’m so keen to return! They also sell incredible raw cream, hickory-smoked bacon and grassfed beef. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but truly nothing beats a cup of hot chocolate made with local honey and raw milk… gourmet comfort food at its finest.
I’m also excited to start baking more again, both gluten-free and glutenous things. Over the summer I made milk bread for the first time since high school, and the kids loved it. Next up on my list in cinnamon rolls and a different kind of sandwich loaf. For gluten-free stuff, pumpkin bread and spice cake are at the top of the list!
After writing about hosting earlier this week, I suddenly thought how much I’d love to host a chili night for friends or family, since it’s something we eat so often in the cold months. So I’m adding that to my list of fall to-do’s, too.
What’s new in your life lately? What’s something new you’ve tried recently?
