We’ve had the most dull and sniffly week, so instead of a Life Lately post today, I thought I would share my thoughts on my winter wardrobe from this year.
Over the past few months I’ve taken to only having clothes in my closet for the current season and I love it! I like to see exactly what I have to work with that day. It lends itself to wearing clothes that might otherwise get stuffed in the back of my closet and forgotten about (my pashmina scarf has gotten a workout lately, although I’ve owned it for years and barely worn it). And, it’s easier to pick out the outliers for a future Goodwill donation.
Speaking of which, here’s what I’ve learned about what I like and don’t like with winter clothes this year:
- My favorite neckline for basic tops is the wide boatneck style. I bought two boatnecks on sale from J.Crew Factory last year and I wear them constantly. The neckline is so flattering on me (with my broad shoulders) and adds a touch of elegance, even if I’m just wearing them with leggings.
- I generally dislike synthetic fabrics. Almost all of my polyester shirts are sitting in the donation bin right now. Some of them are quite cute but they’re not soft, they stain easily and they don’t breathe well so I sweat a lot in them. That does not feel like a cute look, especially when I’m out and about!
- My yoga pants and leggings are probably toxic, so this fall and winter I’m going to invest in some cotton and merino wool ones instead. That buttery-soft synthetic fabric is just too good to be true, apparently.
- In terms of colors a neutral is never a bad choice. I used to wear a lot of color and still love a good navy, emerald green or burgundy top/dress–but my wardrobe goes together much better when I stick with neutrals like oatmeal and grey. If I want to add interest to an outfit, I’ll switch up my jewelry or add a scarf.
- I’ve come around to the long black, fitted parka with the fur-edged hood look. I bought one to prepare for our not-move and it’s basically replaced all my other winter coats. It dresses up or down, it’s SO warm and this is one area I don’t need to own something unique or make a statement–the best choice is the one everyone makes, with good reason.
- There’s no need to own things just for the sake of owning a variety. I’ve rotated through the same 7-8 tops, occasionally adding a sweater, with the same pair of jeans or black leggings this entire winter. And every time I’ve been tempted by a Facebook ad or whatnot, thinking “I really do need to add some interest to my wardrobe”–well, I actually don’t. If I look clean and polished, thoughtfully and functionally dressed on a daily basis, I really don’t need anything else. No need to own the latest greatest in that case.
What are your thoughts? How have you been experimenting with your style recently?
